In our ministry, there are doctrinal differences, but no
strife—nothing beyond good discussions.
As in too many places, there is sin in our local churches.
We see a desire of the elders in different churches to lovingly confront and
rebuke those in known sin and to take church action in discipline, if
necessary. Pastors of several of the believing churches in our area have been
meeting weekly for years to sing and pray for revival. There is a real love for
the brothers.
I would like to encourage you to:
1. Keep short accounts with God (1 John 1:5-10). We would
rather say it in terms of John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in
the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all sin.”
2. Love each other (John 13:34-35). 1 Peter 1:22: “Now that
you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love
for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.”
3. Galatians 6:1: “Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin,
you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you
also may be tempted.” If you have a problem with another Christian (including a
pastor or elder), please check for the truth and then take action in kindness
in terms of l Timothy 5:1 and 19-21.
4. 1 Peter 1:15-16: “But just as he who called you is holy,
so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
5. Colossians 4:6: “Let your conversation be always full of
grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
6. Colossians 4:2-3: “Devote yourselves to prayer, being
watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our
message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in
chains.”
7. 2 Timothy 2:19: “Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation
stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’
and, ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must tum away from
wickedness.’”
Concerning doctrine (a body of teaching), there are primary
and secondary doctrines. If we are brothers in Christ, we are all agreed on the
primary doctrines. They save, sanctify, and glorify those who believe and hold
to them.
1 Timothy 4:16: “Watch your life and doctrine closely.
Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your
hearers.”
1 Timothy 6:3-5: “If anyone teaches false doctrines and does
not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly
teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest
in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife,
malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt
mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means
to financial gain.”
Romans 16:17: “I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those
who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the
teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.”
