“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in
them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers” (1
Timothy 4:16).

This quotation may raise questions, but they are likely good
questions. Recently* I was talking with a young woman who had gone through a
Christian high school and who had graduated from a well-known Christian
college. Her parents were in Christian work. When asked when was the last time
she had completed reading the New Testament, she replied that she had never
read it all. And of course the Old Testament had been read less. This is now a
standard question I ask, and it is almost a standard answer. Christians are not
watching their life and doctrine closely.
