“We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you
also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and
with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete. This is the
message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there
is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the
darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as
he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:3-7).
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that
we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been
healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the
Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Peter 2:24-25).
I selected these two very clear expressions from the
writings of John and Peter because in a succinct way they tell us about God—who
He is, what He did, why He did it, and the resulting fellowship we have with
Him and with each other. To declare all of this is our reason for being.
